The Solution - a smaller footprint
SonicSpider has faced this very problem a number of times and has developed some small footprint and simple solutions that you can "just plug in" . The core idea is that the footprint can be as small as a button or hyperlink. The user clicks the button and a popup window (a floating <div> so as to not run afoul of popup blocking) opens to provide all of the needed features. The user stays on that page, the task is completed, and your core look and feel has not been compromized.
